Shopify Tags - How it works, how to add them and why you should use them to futureproof your quiz.

The Help Me Choose app uses the Shopify tagging system to find and recommend products to your customers, based on the answers they give in the quiz.

During the configuration process the quiz builder will ask you to input the tags that are assigned to products relating to a particular answer. Therefore it is imperative that your Shopify tagging system is up to date. The key to the success of the Help Me Choose app is in the quality of your tagging.

For example if you ask your customers “which colours do your prefer?” with the answers “darker shades”  or “bright colours” it would then be best practice to assign the relevant products with tags like “darker” and “bright” (or any that you already use) and add these tags into the quiz builder for the relevant answers. The app will then use these tags to search for and add these products into the recommendations.

You can use existing tags that you already have installed or add new tags specifically for the quiz. As long as they are added to the quiz builder, the Help Me Choose app will find them.

How To Add Shopify Tags

Shopify tags are quick and easy to add to your products within your Shopify store.

Tags aren't displayed to customers, but you can use tags to categorize products on your online store and organize search results for customers. There are different types of tags but for the Help Me Choose app it will be product tags that you will use.

Considerations for product tags:

  • Tags that are associated with products can have up to 255 characters.
  • Tags are not case sensitive. For example, Approved and approved are the same tag.
  • You can only use letters, numbers, and hyphens in your tags.
  • Letters with accents and other symbols can exclude search results.
  • You can apply up to 250 tags to each product.

Add a tag

You can add a tag when you create or edit products.

Steps:

  1. Open the specific product page in Shopify.
  2. In the Tags section, enter the name of a tag you want to add, or select it from the list of existing tags. If you enter the name for a new tag, then it will automatically be created for future use in the section.
  3. Click Save.

Select tags from a list

You can add, remove, and view the full list of tags on a product.

Steps:

  1. In the Tags section, click Manage.
  2. Under AVAILABLE check the tags on the list that you want to apply.
  3. Click Done.

Remove a tag

You can easily remove a tag from products.

Steps:

  1. Open the specific product page in Shopify.
  2. Click the x next to the tag that you want to remove. The tag is removed only from that specific product.
  3. Click Save.

You can remove a tag from the Manage list on the product page:

  1. In the Tags section, click Manage.
  2. Under SELECTED, uncheck the tags on the list that you want to remove.
  3. Click Done.

Once the tags are assigned to the products within your Shopify store, simply enter the relevant tags that relate to specific answers in the quiz builder.

Why You Should Use Shopify Tags

Using Shopify tags is the most robust way of building a product recommender quiz. By using Shopify tags rather than product titles or descriptions means that relevant products are always displayed. Shopify tags also mean the recommendations are always up to date. For example if you add a new product to your portfolio, by simply adding the relevant tags to the product when you add it to your store will mean this new product is automatically included within the Help Me Choose app.
